Camping Cuisine – Best Foods to Cook Over a Campfire

Harken back to the pioneer days where cooking on a campfire was a way of life. Today, a campfire will most assuredly have someone say they are hungry. But, there is just something about a campfire that makes kids and adults of all ages want to cook something over the fire. So, we’ve rounded up a list of the foods that are not only easy to set up and cook around the fire but sure to please even the pickiest campers.

Entrees

  • Hot dogs – put on a stick and cook as desired over an open flame
  • Chili, Stew, or Baked Beans – all three are classic campfire favorites. They are easy to cook from scratch or simply heat up over the fire and serve.
  • Chicken or steak – kick up your grilling to the open campfire flame. Cut chicken breasts or steak into strips or chunks, put on a stick, and cook over the fire or layout over a grate above the flame.
  • Roasted Peppers, squash, zucchini, and onion – whether it’s cooking on a grate atop the fire or by attaching to a stick (or skewer) and holding over the fire these veggies are easy to grill up and serve.
  • Shrimp and scallops – kick up your dinner skills a notch with these two classics. Both are easy to and quick to cook and pair nicely with meat and veggies.
  • Burgers – always a fan favorite. Easy to make the patties ahead of time then throw on the campfire grill with some veggies and a side of baked beans.

Kabobs

  • Break out the skewers and put your veggies and meat together. Marinate in your favorite sauce or seasoning for a few hours or overnight. After that, simply throw them on a grate over the fire or if the skewers are long enough, hold them over the flames. Be sure to cook all the way through and rotate regularly.

Dessert

  • S’mores – this is the most common campfire favorite. You will need a bag of marshmallows, some chocolate, and graham crackers. Put the marshmallows on a stick and heat them up over the fire. Slide the warm marshmallow onto a graham cracker. Next, add a piece of chocolate and top with another graham cracker for a fun, quick, and easy dessert.
  • Marshmallows – not everyone wants the mess of making s’mores but let’s face it, roasting marshmallows over an open flame is just plain fun!

Cooking over a campfire can be great fun for kids and adults alike. Send the kids to find long sticks or purchase roasting sticks in advance of your trip, whether it’s no matter what meal or even an after-dinner treat, get everyone involved and have fun!
